Lest I forget, I recorded a new drum 'n' bass mix the other day. It's only about 35 minutes long, but it's got some hot new tunes for you.

Download link is here.

Today my advisor called me and offered me an assistanceship.

I'd be teaching undergrads for 20 hours a week. In exchange they would pay about half of my tuition and a stipend of $4000 a semester.

I'll still have to borrow some money -- but a hell of a lot less than I expected to.

Rock.

This past weekend was the annual Derby party at John and Jen's. Oh man, it was epic. We got there around 1:30 and I had my first mint julep soon after. Much fun was had. I played fetch with pugs and caught up with old friends. Had a blast screaming my lungs out watching the race. Unfortunately I got a screaming headache shortly thereafter which pretty much killed the rest of the evening for me. But it was still a total success.

I still haven't figured out yet how to pay for two years of graduate school, but I'm workin' on it.

One of the biggest developments that I hadn't written about yet is that I now finally have something like a proper studio space. Pathetic that it took this long, I know. But now the small blue bedroom on the top floor of the house is mine all mine. I'm in it right now. I've got my meager studio setup here. I did some basic acoustic treatment with mattress pads on the walls and a bunch of crap crammed into the corners to handle bass. My speakers sound pretty nice in here, and I'm getting used to listening a lot of music in here so I ought to be able to do some halfway decent mixes in here before long. Additionally, the walls are a lovely deep blue, I've got a closet for my stuff in here, and I set up my little altar in the corner. So when I'm in here I'm usually doing either music or zazen. It's a nice space.

On that note, I have actually gotten back into devoting serious time to music-making. It's been far too long for that. When you don't have a dedicated space it always seems like a lot of trouble to plug everything up just to twiddle around on the keyboard for a few minutes. But when you do have a space, that wiggly little melody that popped into your head on the way home can be preserved in digital glory in the space of a few short minutes.

Anyway, I got a couple of tunes coming down the pipeline and I think they'll be worth playing for people. It's been a long time since I did anything like that. I've got two mixes of one track I've written evolving in parallel, plus a skankin' dub remix of a track by Annunaki, the greatest neo-Goa band you've never heard. I'm leaving that one until the first two tracks are done, but that'll be soon, but I already have a killer riddim and I'm gonna play some melodica on it. Oh yes.

From dailykos, which I heard about from somenotes:

The following list of Republican candidates and links to their dirty business is part of a campaign of Google bombing, which the Republicans used to great success against John Kerry. The idea is that by posting this stuff, Google searches on the Republican candidates' names are more likely to turn up links to articles on controversies and other bad deeds they've committed. (For example, if you search for Virginia's own George Allen, you're more likely to get the article on some of his racist adventures.)

Is this fighting dirty? Yeah, probably so. But the other side's doing it, and information never hurt anybody.

If you'd like to participate, just click on that dailykos link above. Have fun!

this website allows you to make goofy avatars, fully customizable, that you could easily make into a livejournal icon. i can't really get one i'm thrilled with that looks like me, but i've made a few that look like friends which are really amusing.
